As England prepares for the threat of invasion, a cat’s-cradle of intrigue is woven round the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots.

The Anglo-Scots border of the late 16th century is a battleground, an anarchic land where only the family name inspires loyalty. Luke Ridley is illegitimate and has no allegiances.
